A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SWEATSHIRT
12th Century -- Going as far back as medieval Europe, the hooded garment has been a staple in man's wardrobe, the hooded cape. The word “hood” derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “höd” which has the same root as the word “hat.”
1930's -- The hoodie sweatshirt was invented by The Champion Company, which was formerly know as the Knickerbocker Knitting Company in 1919 which was a sweater mill. It was created out of the need for warmer undergarments (long underwear)
The Leap from Workers to Athletes -- Champion working closely with high schools and universities started creating big thick sweatshirts for the athletes to wear. When athletes started giving their sweatshirts to their girlfriends to wear, their popularity began to grow as a fashion statement.
1970's -- The hoodie is found on the catwalk and is being sported by groups that are looking to portray a sense of defiance.
2005 -- The hoodie is banned from the NBA and from many high schools. It has the stigma of being worn to hide and to show defiance.
TODAY -- Take back the hoodie and be a part of the positive movement.
